Today, the Internet of Things (IoT) Smart Devices add much to the comforts of home. Wi-Fi connected washer, dryer, and refrigerator manufacturers publish smartphone-apps to serve as the User Control Panel. Among other things, Smart Refrigerators have interior cameras that broadcast time-stamped door-access events and shelf-weight sensors tracking food consumption, and communicating grocery lists. Moreover, it is important to remember: “Every connected IoT device is a data collector.”
Cybersecurity Awareness: Smart Appliances and Smart Devices are truly keepers of personal information that includes: Appliance usage and User data. This information is transmitted to metrics-servers; authorized by clicking “Yes” to the Licensing Agreement, just prior installing the User Control Panel App.

Appliance Tips
Did you know? Many repairs can be avoided or minimized by following some simple guidelines! Here are some of the most common:
Frequently Asked Questions

Freezer temperature should be 0° F; refrigerator temperature should be 35° – 37° F. Clean the condensor coil & wash the door gaskets with warm soapy water at least once a year. If your refrigerator has a water filter, be sure to change it regularly per the manufacturers recommendations (usually every 6 months).

When using foil inside the oven to keep it clean, keep it at least one inch from any electric heating element. The foil can reflect the heat back to the element, causing it to overheat & leading to premature failure.
When cooking on an electric surface element, do not allow the heater to glow red hot. The cookware cannot absorb all the heat generated & excessive heat can damage the element, drip bowl & cooktop surface. Keeping grease & foodstuff away from gas range top electrodes will allow for more efficient ignition.
Do not operate the oven without food inside. When there is no load to absorb the microwaves, they can be redirected back to the magnetron tube & cause premature failure. Always keep the inside of the microwave clean & cover foods when heating. Splattering foods can get behind the wave guide cover & cause sparking and burning.
Clogged dryer vents & interiors cause fires in many homes every year, so have them checked & cleaned regularly. A free-flowing vent line to the outside of the house is necessary for good performance. Restricted air flow in a vent line is caused by a clogged, kinked, or too-long vent line (make sure to clean lint out of the vent line at least once per year). Clean lint screens with dishwashing detergent, water & a soft brush. Replace any white plastic vent hose with new foil or metal vents.
Washing machines are much more efficient these days. Using the correct amount and type of detergent will allow the washer to do a better job. Investing in new stainless steel braided hoses helps avoid costly damages, such as bursting hoses. Keep your machine clean by wiping the washer down after each use. Watch the amount of detergent, bleach, and fabric softener that is used. Too much may cause a build up or film in your machine in places where you cannot see or clean. For both top loading & front loading washers, there are products to help keep the insides of your machine clean such as Afresh. Be sure to follow the directions.
Hot water is essential for clean, dry dishes. It should be at least 130° F. Run the hot water at the sink next to the dishwasher until the cold water is purged out of the hot water line. Keeping the dishwasher sump & drains clear of debris will help it clean better & last longer. New energy & safety standards may require a rinse agent for proper drying. Make sure the silverware basket has no holes; cutlery can fall through the hole, inhibit the spray arm from turning, and cause poor washing.
Be sure to run water and the disposal before feeding food waste into it. Be sure the food is ground up & flushed out of the disposal before turning it off. Feeding the disposal, a large quantity of waste too fast can result in clogged pipes. Do not put stringy items, such as corn husks & celery, into the disposal because they will not grind up & can clog the mechanism. Clean the disposal by running a whole container of ice through it.
